When Jen and Greg Gulledge became new parents, things didn’t go as planned. Their son, Jack, was born 10 weeks early and weighed just 3 pounds, 3 ounces. He spent his first seven weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit at Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale in Illinois. Two years later, they returned to the same NICU with their younger son, Micah.
Greg Gulledge, a business architect for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, says he learned from the NICU nurses to focus on the baby — that the nurses would attend to the beeps and alarms from monitors. The couple also learned that insurance works the same way. It gave them the peace of mind to focus on the baby instead of the cost of the extraordinary care their babies needed.
